This Research Handbook explores the latest frontiers in services
trade by drawing on insights from empirical economics, law and
global political economy. The world's foremost experts take stock
of the learning done to date in services trade, explore policy
questions bedeviling analysts and direct attention to a host of
issues, old and new, confronting those interested in the service
economy and its rising salience in cross-border exchange. The
Research Handbook's 22 chapters shed analytical light on a subject
matter whose substantive remit continues to be shaped by rapid
evolutions in technology, data gathering, market structures,
consumer preferences, approaches to regulation and ongoing shifts
in the frontier between the market and the state. Expert
contributors explore the subject through a multidisciplinary lens,
offering a comprehensive overview of lessons learned over two
decades of GATS jurisprudence. The book further chronicles the
rising stakes and involvement of developing countries in global
services trade, notably their growing insertion in global value
chains, as well as the latest advances and remaining challenges in
the statistical measurement of trade in services. Academics and
experts in the policy research community will find value in this
book, as will officials in governmental and international
organization circles as well as representatives of service sector
industry associations. Contributors include: A. Berry, T. Bohn, T.

Trade in services is an increasingly important part of global trade
and, as such, figures prominently in multilateral, regional and
bilateral trade negotiations. In this volume of essays, academics,
negotiators and experts from various international organizations
explore the achievements of such negotiations, together with the
challenges and opportunities which arise and the motivations that
come into play in such negotiations. The contributions highlight
issues in important services sectors, such as distribution, energy,
finance, telecommunications, air transport and the postal and
audiovisual sectors, as well as areas such as cross-border trade
and government procurement. Case studies look into the experiences
of specific countries. The focus on sector analysis and country
experiences sheds light on the state of services liberalization and
the regulation of international trade in services at the beginning
of the twenty-first century, making this an indispensable guide to
ongoing and future international negotiations on this topic.

The year is 1987. America is clawing its way out of the worst
economic crisis since the Great Depression. Washington pursues
illegal and unpopular wars in Central America. In the wealthy
desert playground of Palm Springs, storefronts that once catered to
the rich sit empty and shuttered. Crowds of bored rich teenagers in
designer clothing entertain themselves with expensive cars and
cheap drugs, while those less fortunate haunt darkened street
corners, offering themselves for sale. This is the country to which
war correspondent Peter Brandt returns. Physically and mentally
scarred by the horrors he's covered, Peter comes home to bury his
ex-wife, TV reporter Robin Anderson, only to discover she had been
brutally murdered. With the local police unwilling to investigate
her death, Peter sets out with retired cop Matt Banyon to expose
Robin's killer. They uncover a shadowy world of anti-communists,
drug smugglers, and corrupt politicians, and lay bare old
wounds-including Peter's deep guilt over his failed marriage. In a
final, cliff-hanging struggle, Peter faces his own fears-and death
in a dark and empty place.
A collection of previously published and new short stories by
author Martin Roy Hill. In the title story, "Duty," a Cold War
soldier faces the prospect of starting WWIII. In "Something Far
Away," a former Coastguardsman must face his ghosts from the past.
A Navy investigator faces a different kind of ghost aboard a
nuclear aircraft carrier in "Destroyer Turns." "Brandenberg's
Diaries" tells the story of a retired spy's last mission during
Glasnost. A group of soldiers faces the curse of war over several
generations in "The Stragglers." And in "The Use of Innocence," a
Vietnam vet contemplates a younger generation eager for another
war.
Killers lurk beneath the waves of the western Pacific Ocean. The
USS Encinitas, the first attack submarine crewed by both men and
women, stalks the Crescent Moon, a renegade Iranian sub armed with
nuclear-tipped missiles. But another predator hides aboard the
American sub, a murderer who has already left a trail of dead women
behind on shore. While the crew of the Encinitas plays a deadly
game of hide-and-seek with the Crescent Moon, NCIS agent Linus
Schag must discover the killer's identity before his - or her -
blood lust leads to the submarine's total destruction.
Take a trip with the TIMEless curatorial team in time through space
through this exhibition catalog. Interactive architecture is more
than cinema, more than architecture- it is architectural new media.
The exhibit features over 100 works from award winning designers,
architects, filmmakers, artists and musicians, including ten
commissioned interactive installations. Design critic and planner
Sam Hall Kaplan adds that at last architecture is shown in a new
and exciting perspective, as a place in time: "it is really the way
we experience architecture, temporal and temporary." The curators
express that " the questions are more important than the answers;
we explore immersive environments and connect them to the 20th
century lineage of architecture and film. "Participating artist F.
Myles Sciotto describes the exhibit as "highlighting projects that
blur the threshold of spatial and temporal constructions." Film has
influenced architecture since the dawn of the modern era. The
creative process for entertainment as well as spaces for life and
work share common ground. Perhaps film influences the profession of
architecture through its speculative spaces which are removed from
the constraints of reality. These instances serve as inspiration in
the creation of the architecture of tomorrow. Participants Alan

Beginning with the piece that made Mark Twain famous--"The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County"--and ending with his fanciful "How I Edited an Agricultural Paper," this treasure trove of an anthology, an abridgment of the 1888 original, collects twenty of Twain's own pieces, in addition to tall tales, fables, and satires by forty-three of Twain's contemporaries, including Washington Irving, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Ambrose Bierce, William Dean Howells, Joel Chandler Harris, Artemus Ward, and Bret Harte.
